Hi there,

I'm writing to request that some photos from my flickr albums you linked to on your blog be removed.

In particular, the ones you posted at
24 October 2006 @ 03:45 am
24 October 2006 @ 03:43 am
24 October 2006 @ 03:41 am
24 October 2006 @ 03:39 am

While I personally think it's a nice idea to show the diverse faces of south asians, the way you've implemented it does leave something to be desired.
For instance, in this case, the friend who posted this found my 15 seconds of fame amusing, and so did I. However, when i sent out an email to the people involved in the photos, my partner (non-Indian) fulminated at the tag "brown", and my cousin (one of the people in the photographs) said "weird - I hate that picture of me. gross."

You're welcome to post any photographs of me (hint -- i'm the one in most of them -- the man in the funny hat :) however, i do suggest that you ask permission from people before posting their photographs. I realize that makes it harder, but it doesn't have to be a negative experience -- the people who actually agree are likely to be like-minded individuals who will appreciate your project more.

best,

No problem sidarth. Thanks for the note. We'd be happy to remove the images as requested.

This is a very low-key project and we normally simply use public photos available for any one to find on the net that we find striking/interesting for totally arbitrary personal reasons. Frankly, we are also working under the assumption that, well, no one really looks through this little thing. Thanks again for the note, we're just off to delete the images.

We're going to keep your comment up because you bring up some really interesting points about the nature of this project as well as people's varied reactions to the word 'brown' (as a pseudo-racial category, as an assigned identity and as a form of self-identification). If you'd like us to take the comment down as well, please don't hesitate to let us know.

thanks!

Love,
some brown people
